Our BSc Computer Science (Data Science) degree focuses on constructing robust and usable systems. As well as exploring cutting-edge tools and techniques, it’s designed to help you build the next generation of software tools that other system constructors will use. The course aims to provide a well-integrated balance of theoretical underpinnings and practical experience, strongly informed by the research expertise of our academic staff.

In the later years of the course, you’ll have the option to specialise and develop the skills needed to become a data scientist. Specifically, you will gain the ability to develop and perform large-scale, repeatable data analyses grounded in statistical modelling.

The term data science is often used interchangeably with big data or data analytics. It is becoming increasingly important as huge amounts of complex academic, business, and government data are generated—primarily from online sources. This growing volume of data requires an increasing number of skilled professionals who can analyse and extract insights. To meet this demand, our programme trains students in the latest data science tools and techniques.

ACCREDITATION

Our Computer Science (G400) degree is accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, on behalf of the Engineering Council—fully meeting the academic requirement for Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer.

It is also accredited by BCS, on behalf of the Science Council, for the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Scientist. All graduates receive a British degree that is accredited by Royal Charter in the UK.

Accreditation will be sought from BCS for this Data Science specialism.
